Cloud computing is getting an increasing attention and represents nowadays one of the most important research topics in computing science. Cloud computing refers to both the applications delivered as services over the Internet and the hardware and software systems within the data centers which provide those services (Armbrust et al., 2010). Cloud is now seen as a valid strategy, and specific applications based on these technologies have become widespread.
Healthcare, as with any other service operation, has been impacted by cloud computing phenomenon. And the literature reported both benefits and challenges of cloud computing in the area. However, the evolving nature of science and technology creates new scenarios that must be studied using interdisciplinary and holistic means.
The focus of the special issue is intended to be integral for cloud computing in healthcare, focusing not only on the IT side of the phenomenon, but also on the managerial and the health practitioner sides. The literature reported several studies in the area, but a whole set of coherent articles describing these issues in a single source of information have not been compiled yet. Thus, topics covering industrial issues/applications and academic research into the topic will be included. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
- Internet of Things cloud ecosystems in healthcare
- Mobile cloud computing healthcare information management
- Wireless body area networks combined with cloud computing in healthcare
- Pervasive e-health and assisted living services enabled by cloud computing

- Hardware platforms for cyber-physical systems in healthcare
- Smart sensor systems and miniaturized devices in e-health applications
