Irma Virant-Klun completed her graduate and postgraduate studies of biology and medicine at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, and at the University of Leeds, UK. She has specialized in clinical embryology and has been certified as a a Senior Clinical Embryologist by the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE). Internationally, she gained her research experience at the University of Cambridge, UK, and at the Hospital Cochin, Paris, France. She is a Director of a very busy In Vitro Fertilization Lab at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University Medical Center Ljubljana, and is involved in clinical programs of assisted reproduction and fertility preservation in young patients before undergoing oncotherapy. She is habilitated at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ljubljana, as a Professor of medical cell biology. Her main research interests are stem cells in human reproductive tissues. She is a coordinator of a Slovenian research project on stem cells in adult human ovaries and testicles. She is the (co)author of many scientific papers in international and national scientific literature, a monograph From Gametes to Birth, an atlas This Beautiful Embryo, and several international book chapters, such as Stem Cells in Reproductive Medicine, Informa Healthcare, and Germline Stem Cells, Springer Verlag.
