John B. Sutherland

John B. Sutherland is a Research Microbiologist at the National Center for Toxicological Research, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Jefferson, Arkansas, USA. After receiving the Ph.D. degree from Washington State University, Pullman, Wash, USA, he taught microbiology and did research at Texas Tech University, Michigan Tech University, and the University of Idaho. In 1988, he joined the National Center for Toxicological Research to study the microbial metabolism of toxic chemicals. Dr. Sutherland’s projects have included the microbial transformation of antimicrobial drugs, production and analysis of mycotoxins in foods, microbial transformation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and nitrogen-containing aromatic compounds, methods for rapid identification of pathogenic bacteria and bioterror agents, and the interaction of drugs with intestinal bacteria.
