Sharifah Syed Hassan

Sharifah Syed Hassan is an Associate Professor. She is a virologist with the School of Medicine and Health Sciences at Monash University Sunway Campus (MUSC), Subang Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia. She graduated with a degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M. degree) in 1983 from Universiti Pertanian Malaysia (UPM), Serdang, Selangor, an M.S. degree in veterinary microbiology, University of Surrey, UK (1989-1990), and Ph.D. degree from Oxford University, Oxford, UK (2000). Before joining MUSC, she was the Director of Research for the Department of Veterinary Services, Ministry of Agriculture, Malaysia. Her expertise is in recombinant protein productions in bacteria and baculovirus expression systemsl, virology, and viral vaccines. She is currently developing a multiple-antigen Lactococcus spp. vaccines against influenza. She is also currently involved in research on viral infected-cellular gene expressions and viral-host protein interactions of H5N1, H1N1, and dengue viruses. Her group has developed, among others, their very own Aedes aegypti, chicken brain, and lung cDNA libraries for interaction work with dengue and influenza viruses, respectively, using the yeast-2-hybrid assay and validation of interactions using mammalian 2-hybrid assay.
