Fernando Schmitt

F. C. Schmitt is a Professor of pathology at the University of Porto, Portugal and serves as the Medical Director of the Unit of Pathology at Institute of Pathology and Immunology of Porto University (IPATIMUP). He received his Medical degree from the University of Santa Maria (Brazil) in 1983. Schmitt served his pathology residency at the University of São Paulo and performed a fellowship in clinical cytology at Karolinska Medical Hospital, Stockholm. After ten years in the University of São Paulo, Schmitt moved to Portugal in 1993. He established a research group in breast pathology and an FNA service at IPATIMUP. The Unit of Pathology of IPATIMUP has CAP accreditation since 2005 making the only anatomic pathology lab accredited by CAP in Iberia peninsula. Dr. Schmitt has authored more than 250 papers and has presented widely on breast and cytologic subjects. He serves as an Associate Editor of Diagnostic Cytopathology and belongs on the Editorial Boards for a number of journals (Acta Cytologica, Breast Cancer Research, Cytopathology, Journal of Clinical Pathology, Pathology Research and Practice, and Virchows Archives). Dr. Schmitt has served on various national and international committees of pathology and cytology societies. He was the Chairman of the Working Group of Cytopathology of the European Society of Pathology (ESP) during six years and is the Chairman of three Committees of the International Academy of Cytology and one of the European Federation of Cytology Societies. Dr. Schmitt is a Member of the Executive Committee of the ESP and is the President of the incoming 35th European Congress of Cytology that will be held in Lisbon in 2009. He organized several slide seminars, courses, and other activities in the last European congresses of Pathology and Cytology. Teaching medical students and researching in breast pathology and diagnostic on FNA are his favorite’s activities at this moment.
