Marc J. Shapiro

Marc J. Shapiro is a Professor of surgery and anesthesiology at SUNY-Stony Brook in New York. He is the Chief of the Division of General Surgery, Trauma, Critical Care and Burns of the Department of Surgery. Dr. Shapiro earned his M.S. and M.D. degrees from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich, USA. He completed his residency in surgery at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, and a fellowship in critical care medicine at the University Health Center of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and board certified in surgery and surgical critical care. His clinical interests include the surgical treatment and management of patients experiencing trauma and shock. He is an Editor of the Oxford Textbook of Critical Care. He has been the principal investigator or coinvestigator of a number of clinical trials, studying a wide range of surgical topics, and he has published extensively in journals as JAMA, NEJM, American Journal of Surgery, Circulatory Shock, Critical Care Medicine, and Journal of Trauma. He serves on the Editorial Boards of New Surgery: Molecular Basis of Surgical disease and New Technology and Taiwan Critical Care Medicine, and he is a Reviewer for Intensive Care Medicine and Clinical Intensive Care: International Journal of Critical and Coronary Care Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and the Journal of Trauma. Among his many society memberships, Dr. Shapiro is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Critical Care Medicine.
