G. P. Thami was born in Shimla, India in 1964. He obtained his B.S. degree in medical science (MBBS) from Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla in 1988 followed by his M.S. degree (M.D. in dermatology, venereology, and leprology) from PGIMER, Chandigarh, India in 1991. He worked as Senior Resident and Registrar at University College of Medical Sciences, Delhi and Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla, respectively, till 1996. Since 1996 he joined an upcoming institute in Chandigarh now popularly known as Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh as Senior Lecturer. Presently, he works as a Professor and Head of the Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology at the same hospital in Chandigarh. He also looks after the hospital pharmacy and has held administrative charge of the hospital as Deputy Medical Superintendent in the past. He has been instrumental in designing the dermatological suite in the present department from its inception. Thami is a Member of Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists, Indian Medical Association, and National Academy of Medical Sciences. Currently, he is holding the post of President of Chandigarh Dermatology Society. He has been a Resource Faculty for National AIDS Control Organization, Medical Council of India, Punjab Health Corporation, and National Board of Examination. In addition, Thami has been a researcher through out his career and has published more than 150 research papers in national and international journals. More than 100 of his publications are indexed in the index medicus. He serves as a Reviewer for many journals of repute like Clinical and Experimental Dermatology, Medical Science Monitor, Journal of Postgraduate Medicine, American Journal of Clinical Dermatology. His areas of interest are dermatological surgery, hair transplant, sexually transmitted diseases, sexual health, and tropical dermatology.
