Virginia De Cicco

Sapienza Università di Roma, Italy

Virginia De Cicco currently works as an Associate Professor of mathematical analysis in Dipartimento di Scienze di Base e Applicate per l' Ingegneria (S.B.A.I.), the University of Rome "La Sapienza," Rome, Italy. She holds a degree in mathematics from the University of Calabria, Cosenza, Italy; an M.Phil. degree in functional analysis from Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati (SISSA) in Trieste, Italy, 1989, under the supervision of Prof. Gianni Dal Maso; and a Ph.D. degree in functional analysis from the same school in 1992, under the supervision of Prof. Gianni Dal Maso. Cicco completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship of National Research Council (CNR) at the Laboratoire d'Analyse Numérique, Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris VI (from 1991 to 1993). She served as a Researcher (from 1992 to 2010) at University of Rome "La Sapienza," an Associate Professor (since 2010) at University of Rome "La Sapienza," and a Visiting Professor (August 2011) at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, Mass, USA. Her research interests include calculus of variations (variational problems in the space BV of functions of bounded variation, lower semicontinuity for integral functionals in BV, relaxation, and integral representation of relaxed functional in Sobolev spaces and in BV, and lower semicontinuity for polyconvex integrals); elliptic equations (Dirichlet forms and degenerate elliptic equations, asymptotic problems for Dirichlet forms, and elliptic nonlinear equations on unbounded domains); and conservation laws (applications of the chain rule formula in BV to the conservation laws).
