Joaquim F. Martins-Filho

Joaquim F. Martins-Filho was born in Recife, PE, Brazil, in 1966. He received the B.S. degree in electronics engineering from the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), Recife, PE, in 1989, and the M.S. degree in physics from the same University in 1991. He received his Ph.D. degree in electronics engineering from the University of Glasgow, Glasgow, Scotland, in 1995. Between 1995 and 1998, he was a Visiting Professor at the Physics Department of UFPE. In 1998, he joined the Photonics Group, Department of Electronics and Systems of UFPE, in Recife, where he currently is an Associate Professor. His research interests iclude devices, subsystems, transmission systems, and networking for optical communications and optical sensors. He has coordinated several research projects financed by state and federal agencies as well as by industries like SIEMENS-Brazil, PARKS, and PADTEC. He also took part in other research projects sponsored by ERICSSON-Brazil and CHESF. He has authored more than 100 papers and 1 international patent. Martins-Filho is a Senior Member of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), Senior Member of OSA (Optical Society of America), Member of SBMO (Brazilian Microwave and Optoelectronics Society), SBrT (Brazilian Telecommunication Society), and SBF (Brazilian Physics Society), as well as a Research Fellow of the National Research Council of Brazil (CNPq). He is a Member of the Editorial Board of the journal ISRN Communications and Networking. Since 2009, he has been a Member of the Engineering, Science, and Technology Board of FACEPE (Foundation for Science and Technology Development of the State of Pernambuco, Brazil).
