Yuri N. Utkin was born in Yaroslavl, Russia, in 1951. He studied chemistry at the Moscow State University and received the M.S. degree in 1974. After graduating, Utkin joined the Shemyakin-Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry Russian Academy of Sciences, Russia, where he spent his entire career. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in 1980 and his D.S. degree in 1996. He was promoted to Professor in 2006. His current research interests encompass isolation of proteins with new pharmacological properties from animal venoms; elucidation of the general principles of protein recognition for particular cases of the receptor interactions with neuropeptides and neurotoxins; characterization of ligand-binding sites in neuroreceptors as a prerequisite for rational drug design. Utkin is a Member of European Society for Neurochemistry (since 1987), European Peptide Society (1990), and International Society on Toxinology (2001).
