Reinhard Bretzel

Reinhard Bretzel was born on May 1st, 1946. He got his training at the Universities of Munich, Ulm, and Giessen, Germany. Currently, he works as a Chairman, Internal Medicine, Endocrinology and Diabetology, the Director, Third Medical Department and Policlinic, the Director, German Islet Cell Transplant Center, and the Director, International Islet Transplant Registry (ITR). Bretzel received various honors and awards, such as Scientific Award of the Justus-Liebig-University of Giessen (1985), Ferdinand-Bertram-Price of the German Diabetes Association (1986), Buerger-Buesing Foundation Award (1999), Honorary Member of the Slovakian Medical Society (2001), Paul Langerhans Medal, and Life Award of the German Diabetes Association (2009). His main scientific interests include experimental and clinical islet cell and stem cell transplantation; prevention and treatment of diabetic secondary complications; immunology of diabetes mellitus; investigator of several national and international multicenter studies in type 1 and type 2 diabetes. In addition, Bretzel’s scientific work manifested in originals (PubMed by June 15, 2009): 345, total impact factor (IF 2007): 905,62; he wrote more than 100 reviews, 60 articles in books, being an Editor of more than 10 books, has been an Invited Speaker more than 700 times, and serves as the Chairman of various sessions at national and international congresses/meetings.
