Pirta Hotulainen

University of Helsinki, Finland

Dr. Hotulainen completed his doctorate in cell biology and genetics by studying function of a novel actin binding protein SWAP-70 at the Münster University (Germany) in 2002 (career started with maiden name "Hilpelä"). Studies with SWAP-70 inspired her to continue actin cytoskeleton research in Professor Lappalainen´s group at University of Helsinki (Finland) as a post doctorate. In professor Lappalainen´s group, she became familiar with numerous aspects of actin regulation. As highlights, she elucidated the mechanisms of actin stress fiber formation in motile cells. In neurons, she defined the mechanisms of actin polymerization and depolymerization during dendritic spine morphogenesis. Currently, she continues studies of actin cytoskeleton regulation in dendritic spines with her own group.
