Dr. Alan Hanjalic is an Associate Professor of Multimedia Technology at the Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands. He was a visiting scientist at Hewlett-Packard Labs, British Telecom Labs, Philips Research and Microsoft Research Asia. Research interests of Dr. Hanjalic are in the area of multimedia information retrieval where he (co-)authored more than 70 publications, among which the books Image and Video Databases: Restoration, Watermarking and Retrieval (Elsevier, 2000) and Content-Based Analysis of Digital Video (Kluwer, 2004). Dr. Hanjalic is on editorial boards of the IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, Journal of Multimedia and Advances in Multimedia. He has also been a (Lead) Guest Editor of the International Journal of Image and Graphics (WSS), Special Issue on Content-based Image and Video Retrieval (2001), Proceedings of the IEEE, Special Issue on Advances in Multimedia Information Retrieval (2008), IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, Special Issue on Integration of Content and Context for Multimedia Management (2009), Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation, Special Issue on Emerging Techniques for Multimedia Content Sharing, Search and Understanding (2009), and EURASIP Journal on Image and Video Processing, Special Issue on Dependable Semantic Inference (2010). He has also served in the organization committees of the leading conferences in the multimedia field, such as ACM Multimedia (Program Chair 2007, General Chair 2009), ACM CIVR (Program Chair 2008), WWW conference (Area Chair 2008), Multimedia Modeling Conference (Area Chair 2007), and IEEE ICME (Area Chair 2007). Dr. Hanjalic was a Keynote Speaker at the Pacific-Rim Conference on Multimedia, Hong-Kong, December 2007, and an invited member, organizer and chair of the panels at ACM Multimedia (2007), ACM CIVR (2008), and the Picture Coding Symposium (PCS) 2007. He is a co-initiator and a member of the coordinating board of the EU FP7 Network of Excellence PetaMedia.
