Elene C. Pereira-Maia

Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil

Elene Cristina Pereira Maia received her Ph.D. degree in chemistry from Université Paris XIII, France, 1994; M.A. degree in chemistry from the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil, 1989; B.A. degree (pharmaceutical sciences and biochemistry) Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil, 1984. She works as an Associate Professor in the Chemistry Department, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil, a Researcher of the CNPq, Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico, Brazil (National Commission for Scientific Research)and a Visiting Professor, Université Paris XIII, France (2002-2006). She also has an editorial activity as an Editorial Board Member of Global Journal of Inorganic Chemistry. Maia's areas of expertise lie in the field of bioinorganic chemistry, at the interface of coordination chemistry and pharmacology. She has been working with metal compounds of biological interest, comprising the synthesis and characterization of new metal compounds as well as the study of their pharmacological properties and the mechanism of action. More specifically, her goal is the development of new antitumoral and antimicrobial drugs capable of overcoming cellular resistance. She also studies the cellular uptake of metal compounds and their reactivity with intracellular targets, such as DNA and glutathione.
