Abbas Vafai

Abbas Vafai has got his Ph.D. degree in microbiology from the Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Ill, USA in 1982. He completed his Postdoctoral Fellowship in Neurovirology, at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pa, USA in 1985. Since 2010, he works as an Associate Director for Planning and Policy, DSR, NCEZID, CDC. From 1997 to 2010, he served as the Chief of the Biologics Branch, DSR, NCEZID, CDC. From 1993 to 1996, he was the President of Viro Research, Inc., Rockford, Illinois. From 1992 to 1995, he worked as an Assistant Director in the Diagnostic Molecular and Genetic Laboratory, Department of Pathology, College of Medicine at Rockford, University of Illinois. He has registered his invention, Varicella-Zoster Virus Subunit Vaccine, under patent no. 5,829,607; currently in Phase III clinical trials. He is an Editorial Board Member of the International Journal of Virology and Molecular Biology. He is a member of the NIH/ADMHA Consultant File, the American Society for Microbiology, and the American Society for Virology. His major interests include DNA viruses, biological structure and function of viral glycoproteins, and viral subunit vaccines.
