Frédéric Smektala

Frédéric Smektala was born in 1966 in Monceau-les-Mines, France. He became a Chemical Engineer in 1989 after completing scientific studies at the Ecole Nationale Superieure de Chimie de Rennes, and he obtained the M.A. degree in solid state chemistry from the University of Rennes 1. He serves as a Research Scientist at the Laboratory of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Rennes 1. He received the Ph.D. degree in 1992, working on fiber optic infrared glasses halides. This work was then developed during a Postdoctoral Fellowship for 18 months with the Research Laboratories of Alcatel Alsthom in Marcoussis, France, within the framework of the European project RACE GAIN (Glass Amplifier for Integrated Network). He was then appointed as a Lecturer at the University of Rennes 1 in 1994 and as a Professor in 2002. He has published about 70 articles and conference papers. He joined the team of SCO LPUB in 2006 to further develop this work within a team with expertise in the field of nonlinear effects in optical fibers.
