Jordi Salas-Salvadó has occupied teaching and research posts at the Faculty of Medicine in Reus (UB) since 1984. At present, he is a Professor of nutrition and bromatology at the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology and the Director of the Human Nutrition Unit at the Faculty of Medicine, Rovira i Virgili University (URV). Since 1991, he has been the Head of Nutrition of the Internal Medicine Service at the Sant Joan Hospital of Reus. His research lines include the study of the diet of different populations; evaluation of iron deficiency and the nutritional state of populations; adaptation of energy metabolism during renutrition, calorie restriction, and physical exercise; inflammation, energy metabolism, and obesity; denutrition mechanisms in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus; the effect of fiber and phytosterols on the metabolism of cholesterol; and the effect of the Mediterranean diet on cardiovascular diseases. Since 1983, he has directed 12 research projects financed by public bodies (DGICYT, ICO, Fondo de Investigaciones de la Seguridad Social, PROFIT, CICYT, and ESPEN) and 16 projects in conjunction with the pharmaceutical or food industries. He has published more than 150 original articles as well as numerous reviews and editorials with an accumulated impact factor, according to the SCI, of 302.2. He is the editor of 4 books, and he has also coauthored more than 50 books.
