Ziyad Al-Aly received his medical degree from the prestigious American University of Beirut, Beirut, Lebanon, in 1999. He completed his internal medicine residency in 2003 and nephrology fellowship at Saint Louis University Hospital, St. Louis, MO, USA, in 2005. Dr. Al-Aly was then a Research Fellow at the Center for Cardiovascular Research and the Division of Bone and Mineral Metabolism at Washington University in Saint Louis, St. Louis, MO, USA. Dr. Al-Aly joined the Division of Nephrology at the Saint Louis Veterans Affairs Medical Center, St. Louis, MO, USA, in July 2006. Dr. Al-Aly is interested in the translational application of basic research. He is also interested in clinical epidemiology and outcomes research. His current research focus is to use large patient databases to examine issues related to chronic kidney disease. Other interests include mineral bone disorders in chronic kidney disease, vascular calcification, vitamin D metabolism, and renal and nonrenal solid organ transplant related outcomes. Dr. Al-Aly has numerous peer-reviewed publications in major journals including the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, the American Journal of Kidney Diseases, Kidney International, Transplant International, and the American Journal of Nephrology. Dr. Al-Aly is also a contributing author to up-to-date area of solid organ transplantation. Dr. Al-Aly serves on the Editorial Board of Kidney International, Transplant International, and Translational Research. Dr. Al-Aly currently serves on the Scientific Advisory Board and the Board of Directors of the National Kidney Foundation of Eastern Missouri and the Metro East. He is a Member of numerous professional societies including the American Society of Nephrology and the National Kidney Foundation.
