Kien T. Nguyen

Cubist Pharmaceuticals, Inc., USA

Kien T. Nguyen works as a Scientist and Senior Scientist in Cubist Pharmaceuticals, Lexington, Mass, USA, since 2002. His areas of interest include bioassay development and target validation, management of preclinical projects of drug development using structure-based drug design approach, multidisciplinary Think Tank team evaluating and executing new project initiatives, natural product discovery from soil bacteria, antibiotic resistant mechanisms in pathogens, microbial interaction and biofilm, combinatorial biosynthesis of lipopeptide antibiotics by manipulating NRPS pathways, antibiotic producing strain screening, and fermentation and yield enhancement. Nguyen completed his Postdoc in Biozentrum, University of Basel, Basel, Switzerland, from 1997 to 2002, identifying and studying regulatory cascades of genes involved in actinomycetes, stress responses, cell-cycle development, antibiotic resistance, and antibiotic biosynthesis. He was a Postgraduate Trainee from 1990 to 1992; Ph.D. student from 1992 to 1995; and a Scientist in the Institute of Microbiology, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Prague, the Czech Republic, from 1995 to 1997, studying the regulation, purification, and enzymatic characterization of enzymes involved in Streptomyces nitrogen metabolism. From 1987 to 1990, he served as a Scientist in the Institute of Tropical Biology, National Research Center for Sciences and Technologies, Vietnam, where he investigated biosynthesis of fungal and bacterial metabolites by fermentation. Nguyen obtained his B.S. degree in microbiology from the Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, from 1983 to 1987, studying the biosynthesis of the plant growth hormone gibberellin by the fungus Fusarium spp.: strain isolation, solid-state fermentation, and bioassay.
