Masahiko Kawaguchi was born in Osaka, Japan in 1962. He graduated from Nara Medical University in 1988. He received Ph.D at Nara Medical University in 1997 with a topic on intraoperative monitoring of motor evoked potentials. He had worked as a research fellow in neuroanesthesia research laboratory (Piyush M Patel and John C. Drummond), Department of Anesthesiology, University of California, San Diego from 1998 to 2000. He then moved back to Department of Anesthesiology, Nara Medical University, Nara, Japan and became an assistant professor and an associate professor in 2000 and 2006, respectively. His research interests include neuroanesthesia, neuromonitoring and neuroprotection. He have published a number of articles regarding mild hypothermia, monitoring of motor evoked potentials, managements in neurosurgical procedures and neuroprotection in cerebral and spinal cord ischemia. Now he is a director in Japan of Asian Society of Neurosurgical Anesthesia and Critical Care. He is a member of Editorial Boards of Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology and Journal of Anesthesia.
