Nestor V. Torres

Nestor V. Torres's research activity has been developed in the field of systems biology and biotechnology where he has been active in developing mathematical models of biochemical systems aimed at achieving a better understanding of the regulatory mechanisms responsible its dynamic behavior and its control. From these models is possible through the application of mathematical optimization techniques, the design of gene modification strategies that increase the production of biomolecules of interest (industrial, pharmaceutical, etc.) or the design of therapeutic strategies for human pathologies. As a result of this work he has published over 80 articles in scientific journals in the field referenced in the Journal Citation Report. He is the coauthor of a text on mathematical modeling and optimization of biochemical systems (Pathway Analysis and Optimization in Metabolic Engineering, 2002, Cambridge University Press), which has been translated into Mandarin Chinese as well as several book chapters in specialized monographs. Since 1992, Professor Torres has directed many research projects funded in competitive calls of the National R&D Agencies and Canary Islands Agency as well as other Research Actions of the Ministry of Education and international collaborative projects. He routinely carries out reviewers for many scientific journals and research funding agencies such as the Directorate General for Universities and Research of the Gobierno de Canarias; ANEP; Fonds zur Förderung der Wissenschaftlichen Forschung (Austrian Science Fund); National Science Foundation (USA); Welcome Trust (UK); National Agency of Scientific and Technological Promotion of Argentina and European Union. He has been the Chairman of the organizing committee of several international conferences and has been a Member of the scientific committee of many others. Currently, he serves as Secretary of the Spanish Network of Systems Biology and Member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Bioautomation.
