Ken-ichi Mukaisho serves as a pathologist, working in the Department of Pathology of Shiga University of Medical Science (SUMS). He graduated SUMS in 1993 and joined the First Department of Surgery of SUMS. He worked as a surgeon from 1993 to 1999. Then, he joined the postgraduate school of SUMS in 2000 and changed the work from a surgeon to a pathologist in this year. He obtained the Ph.D. degree from SUMS in 2003. He visited Oxford (Cancer and Immunogenetics laboratory, Sir Walter Laboratory, John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, UK) from April to September in this year (2006) as an academic visitor. He also visited London University (Centre for Diabetes, Blizard Institute of Cell and Molecular Science). He is now specialized in gut carcinogenesis, especially esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, and colon cancer. His researches have been performed using animal models, cancer cell lines, and human materials. He is especially interested in the role of bile acids in carcinogenesis and cancer behavior of Barrett esophagus leading to esophageal adenocarcinoma.
