Carlos Peniche is a Professor at the Physical Chemistry Department of the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Havana. He graduated as a Licentiate in chemistry at the University of Havana, Havana, Cuba, in 1969, and received his Ph.D. degree in chemistry from the University of Essex (UK) in 1973 and his D.S. degree (2006) from the University of Havana, Cuba. He leads a research group on polymeric biomaterials at the Centre of Biomaterials of the University of Havana. The research activities of this group are related to the area of polymeric biomaterials, based on synthetic as well as natural polymers. His main interests are chitosan, its isolation, characterization, and application in different fields, membranes and hydrogels of chitosan polyelectrolyte complexes, chitosan matrices for controlled release applications, and chitosan-hydroxiapatite composites. He is an academic of the Cuban Academy of Sciences and a Secretary of the National Committee for the Scientific Degrees of Cuba.
