Cinzia Marchese has received her M.S. degree in biological science (1982), specialty in general pathology with molecular biology profile (1987), and Ph.D. degree in immunopharmacology (1992). She is Full Professor of laboratory's medicine (since 2005) at the Faculty of Medicine of Sapienza University of Rome, Rome, Italy, and Head of the Regenerative Medicine Unit (since 2008) at Polyclinic Umberto I, Rome, Italy. She spent a Fellowship research period at Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA, from 1986 to 1987, and she continued a Fogarty Fellowship program at National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, MA, USA, from 1988 to 1991. She has been a Member of the Editorial Board of European Tissue Culture Society (ETCS) and President of a 3-year degree program in Biomedical Laboratory Technician at University Sapienza of Rome since 2009. In 2009 she obtained the title of Qualified Person from the Italian Board of Pharmaceutical Medicines for Cellular Therapy (AIFA) and is Head of Center of Expertise for surgical treatment with stem cells for Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome. Her research field is regenerative medicine. The group she coordinated has generated an in vitro skin substitute harboring autologous fibroblasts, keratinocytes, and melanocytes, to establish a new clinical method in the treatment of skin disorders as congenital giant melanocytic nevi. This work was recognized for the efforts to gain a better understanding of some of the markers associated with the risk of transformation into malignant melanoma. Recently, she developed a new technique for in vitro reconstruction of neovaginal tissue, in the treatment of patients with Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser Syndrome. This work has received an Honor Award for the introduction worldwide of effective new surgical treatment protocols in reconstruction of vaginal tissue. Her research interests also include stem cell biology, signal transduction, epithelial growth factors and receptors, cell therapy, and regenerative medicine.
