Simon Ching-Shun Kao

Dr. Simon Kao was born in Hong Kong and graduated from the University of Hong Kong College of Medicine in 1976. He then completed his Radiology residency training in Hong Kong at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and a year of additional training at the Kings College Hospital, London, and Sheffield Children’s Hospital, Sheffield, United Kingdom. Dr. Kao received the Diploma in Medical Radiodiagnosis in 1982 and Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists in 1983. After completing two years of residency at the University of Iowa, he was certified by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) in 1987. He was appointed assistant professor of Radiology in 1988 and was promoted to full professor in 1997 at the Carver College of Medicine, University of Iowa. Dr. Kao was certified by the ABR in Pediatric Radiology since 1995. In August 2007, he became the Director of Pediatric Radiology Fellowship Program at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. Dr. Kao has a wide research interest in all aspects of pediatric imaging, including ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging, gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts, chest diseases, neonatology, genetics, and oncology. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles and has contributed to many chapters in 8 books. He is currently serving as a Steering Committee member in the Soft Tissue Sarcoma Committee of the Children’s Oncology Group and a referee for several journals, including Radiology and American Journal of Roentgenology. Dr. Kao was a co-editor of a two-volume book Imaging Children and had served on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Roentgenology from 1998-2005. He was honored to receive the Fellow of the American College of Radiology in 2004.
