Yasuhiko Kaku, holder of the M.D. and Ph.D. degrees, was born on September 14, 1958. He graduated in 1984 from Gifu University School of Medicine, Gifu, Japan. From 1996 to 1998, Kaku was a Clinical Fellow in Department of Neurosurgery, Zürich University, Zürich, Switzerland and from 1998 to 2003 an Associate Professor at the Department of Neurosurgery, Gifu University School of Medicine, Gifu, Japan. Since 2004, he has been Professor and Chair at the Department of Neurosurgery, Asahi, and Director of Stroke Center, Asahi University Murakami Memorial Hospital, Gifu, Japan, and since 2006 a Clinical Professor at the Department of Neurosurgery, Gifu University School of Medicine, Gifu, Japan. Kaku received the Japan Neurosurgical Society "Watanabe" Award in 1993. He is a Member of the following: the Japan Neurosurgical Society, Japanese Society of Neuroendovascular Treatment, Japanese Conference on Surgery of Cerebral Stroke, the Japan Stroke Society, World Federation of Neurosurgery, the International Society of Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism, and World Federation of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology. His clinical and scientific expertise includes surgery for cerebral stroke, neuroendovascular treatment, cerebral vasospasm, and surgery for intrinsic brain stem lesions.
