Ian J. McNiven

Ian J. McNiven has a PhD in anthropology/archaeology from the University of Queensland (1991) and is currently Professor of Australian Indigenous Archaeology at Monash University, Melbourne. He specialises in the archaeology of Australian Indigenous coastal societies. Key field research locations are Torres Strait, western Victoria and southern Papua New Guinea. Conceptual and theoretical interests include ritual orchestration of seascapes and the colonial history of Indigenous archaeology. Prof. McNiven also undertakes numerous consultancies for Indigenous organisations, native title bodies, and development companies. He has written/edited nine volumes and published over 120 refereed journal papers and book chapters.
