Akihiro Kakehashi

Akihiro Kakehashi is a Professor of ophthalmology at Saitama Medical Center, Jichi Medical University, Saitama, Japan. He graduated from Jichi Medical University, Shimotsuke, Japan, in 1983. From 1989 to 1992, he was a Research Fellow at the Schepens Eye Research Institute, Boston, Mass, USA. He received his Ph.D. degree from Asahikawa Medical College, Asahikawa, Japan, in 1994. He is interested in a posterior vitreous detachment and allied diseases. He established the method of biomicroscopic vitreous examination and the clinical classification of posterior vitreous detachment. Dr. Kakehashi focuses his current research on the pathogenesis and treatment of diabetic retinopathy. He developed the novel animal model of diabetic retinopathy, the Spontaneous Diabetic Torii rat (SDT rat).
