Petros Karakitsos graduated from the medical school of the Athens University in 1982 and is specialized in cytopathology. During his carrier, he has been in numerous research and hospital positions. Today, he is an Associate Professor of cytopathology at the Medical School of the Athens University and the Director of the Department of Cytopathology of Attikon University Hospital, Athens, Greece. He has been responsible for more than 10 training courses for the students of the Medical School of the Athens University and in 49 continuous medical education training programs, for specialized medical doctors or medical doctors under specialization. Professor Karakitsos has participated in 56 national seminars, 46 national conferences, 21 international seminars, 31 international congresses and has been a member of the organizing committee of numerous national and international conferences and seminars. He has participated in the scripting of 19 books or book chapters and has published 106 papers in scientific journals of the SCI having more than 850 citations from the international scientific community. In addition, he has more than 150 presentations in international conferences and more than 180 in Greek conferences most of them being published as abstracts in international or national journals. Fourteen of these publications have being awarded the best conference presentation. Professor Karakitsos is a reviewer of several scientific magazines as well. Since his carrier, he has supervised 11 completed Ph.D. dissertations and has been a councilor of 30 additional completed Ph.D. dissertations. He actively participates in 24 research projects funded from the EU, national sources, or by the Department of Cytopathology. Professor Karakitsos is a Member of 10 scientific organizations, among them: Greek Cytology Society, Societe Française de Cytology Clinique, New York Academy of Sciences, Cochrane Colposcopy and Cervical Cytopathology Collaborative Group (C5 group).
