Frédéric Cotton graduated in pharmacy, Université Libre de Bruxelles, in 1992 and in clinical biology in 1997. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in pharmaceutical sciences in 2003. He is the Head of the special biochemistry clinic of the Erasme University Hospital, Brussels, Belgium, and of the Laboratory of Medical Biochemistry of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Université Libre de Bruxelles where he is also Professor of medical biochemistry. His areas of expertise are red cell disorders (sickle cell disease, thalassemias, erythrocytic enzyme deficiencies), iron metabolism, porphyrias, lithiasis, therapeutic drug monitoring, capillary electrophoresis, and chromatography.
