Werner Baumgartner

Werner Baumgartner was born in Amstetten, Austria, in 1971. He graduated at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria, in mechatrinics (diploma, 1994) and finished his Ph.D. degree there in 1997. After a short time as a Visiting Researcher at Yale University (1997), he became Research Assistant at the University of Würzburg (Germany) at the Institute for Anatomy and Cell Biology. In 2004, he became a Proffesor of zoology at the RWTH-Aachen University. Baumgartner's current research interests are investigation of adhesion and cell recognition molecules in the vascular endothelium an in the nervous system, atomic force microscopy (especially force spectroscopy), and laser tweezer studies, theoretical biophysics, biochemistry, and biophysics of the cytoskeleton, characterization of biological surfaces, biomechanics, and development of new techniques in microscopy and protein science.
