Graduate of the Medical School of the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki (1975) and a PhD of the University of Athens (1988). Research fellow at the Harvard University and Visiting Ass.Professor at the Boston University (1986-1988),Senior Research Associate at the Royal Brompton Hospital,UK (1998-1999), ERS visiting professor, Vienna Medical University.Currently, he is Professor of Pneumonology at the University of Thrace and head of the Department of Pneumonology at the University Hospital of Alexandroupolis. He is also chairman of the Dept of Internal Medicine of the University Hospital of Alexandroupolis and the Dept of Internal Medicine of the Democritus University of Thrace. He is editor of the book “Pleural Diseases” (Marcel Dekker NY, 2004, and 2nd ed, Informa NY, 2009) of the series Lung Biology on Health and Disease(USA). He has published >350 articles in national and international peer-review journals, has >3800 citations, H index 34, he wrote >40 chapters in books,is member of the Editorial Board and reviewer of many medical journals. He participated in the development of the ERS official statements for COPD (1995), Tuberculosis management in Europe (1999, Interstitial Lung Disease (2001), and LAM (2009). He is a member of the committee for the development of the new ATS/ERS/JRS guidelines for IPF and those for Idiopathic Interstitial Pneumonias. National Delegate of the ERS (1999-2003), member of the council and the nomination committee of the ERS (2002-2003), and a member of the long-range planning committee of the ATS and the ERS. Auditor of the ERS (2004-2007) and a member of the Assembly on Allergy, Inflammation and Immunology (AII) Program Committee of the ATS.
