Sigmund H. Ein

Dr. Sigmund Hirsch Ein is a Pediatric General Surgeon whose practice focused on all aspects of Pediatric General Surgery. He was trained in Pediatric Surgery in three centers: Montreal, New York, and Toronto. At the time of his retirement in January 2004, he was the senior and most experienced surgeon at the Hospital for Sick Children (HSC), and also in Canada. He sat on numerous committees at HSC and the three major Pediatric Surgical organizations in North America: Canadian Association of Paediatric Surgeons, American Pediatric Surgical Association and the Surgical Section of the American Academy of Pediatric. He has four fellowships: FRCSC for General Surgery and Pediatric Surgery, FACS, FAAP and he was certified in Pediatric Surgery by the American Board of Surgery. He published over 200 papers, articles and chapters on a wide variety of Pediatric Surgical topics and he wrote more than 20 papers and chapters on intussusception and as such, he was recognized as an international authority on the subject. He was one of the originators and major proponent of "Peritoneal Drainage for Perforated Necrotizing Enterocolitis in Premature Neonates. For the last 25 years he has been an Editorial Consultant for the Journal of Pediatric Surgery. Since his retirement, he remains as Honorary Staff in the Division of Pediatric Surgery, HSC and Associate Professor , Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. He is on the Courtesy Staff, Department of Surgery, Lakeridge Health Oshawa where he is a part-time Operating Room Surgical Assistant. He also continues to actively write papers and chapters many of which encompass his 37 years of practice and experience.
