Paul M. Tulkens holds an M.D. and Ph.D. degrees (Agrégé de l’enseignement supérieur). He was the Founder and the Head (1993–2003) of the Unit of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology, the Founder of the Centre of Clinical Pharmacy (2005), a Professor of pharmacology at the Faculty of Medicine (Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences) of the Catholic University of Louvain, a Professor of human biochemistry and biochemical pathology at the Faculty of Medicine (School of Medicine) of the Université de Mons-Hainaut. He authored about 200 publications in the topics of pathophysiology of lysosomes, endocytosis and the interactions of drugs and chemicals with membranes and subcellular organelles, antibiotic toxicity (molecular, cellular, and clinical aspects), chemotherapy of intracellular infection, antibiotic efflux pumps and transporters, pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of anti-infective drugs (in vitro models and clinical trials, discovery and development of new antibiotics, promotion of proper antibiotic usage (trough guidelines and public actions), and implementation of clinical pharmacy.
