Jerzy Tiuryn is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics (MIM), University of Warsaw, Warsaw, Poland. He is the Leader of a research group in computational biology and bioinformatics at MIM. For the past two terms (from 2005 to 2012), he was the Vice Dean of MIM for scientific matters and international relations. His background includes mathematics and computer science. He received all his scientific degrees in computer science (M.S., Ph.D., and D.S. degrees). Initially, his research was concentrated with theoretical computer science, including semantics and verification of programs, logics of programs, lambda calculus, and type theory. He supervised about a dozen of Ph.D. theses, half of them in bioinformatics. He is currently interested in gene regulation, sequence analysis, and evolution. In 1996, he was elected as a Member of Academia Europaea. He is a Board Member of European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM). He was the first President and Founding Member of Polish Bioinformatics Society.
