Hiromichi Yonekawa is now a Senior Scientist (part-time) at the Center for Basic Technology Research. He was born in Mie Prefecture, Japan, in 1946. After receiving his Ph.D. degree in zoology from the Tokyo University of Education, Japan, in 1974, he started his research career at the Saitama Cancer Center Research Institute, Saitama, Japan, as an Investigator. In 1988, he moved to The Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Medical Science as a Department Head of the Department of Laboratory Animal Science, where he later in 1996 became a Department Director. In 1999, he was designated as a Vice Director of the institute. After his retirement in 2009, he was appointed as a Director of the Center for Basic Technology Research. The focus of his research is mouse molecular genetics, in particular, genetics of mitochondrial DNA. His research interests also include advanced transgenic technology, for development and establishment of animal models recapitulating human diseases.
