Thomas J. Schmidt

Universität Münster, Germany

Born in 1963, Thomas J. Schmidt studied Pharmacy from 1984-1989 at the University of Duesseldorf, Germany. From 1990 to 1994 he pursued his doctoral studies (Dr. rer. nat.) in Pharmaceutical Biology in the group of Prof. Dr. Günter Willuhn. After finishing his thesis on "Sesquiterpene lactones, Diterpenes, Flavonoids and further Consitutents of Arnica angustifolia" he spent the year 1995 as Post Doc and DFG fellow in the group of Prof. Dr. Nikolaus H. Fischer at Organic Chemistry Dept., Louisiana state University, Baton Rouge, performing mainly NMR studies on terpenoids. Back in Duesseldorf, he continued these studies and finished his "habilitation" in 1999. In 2004 he was appointed Professor in Pharmaceutical Biology at the University of Duesseldorf and, shortly after this, moved on to the University of Muenster, where he has been working as Professor of Pharmaceutical Biology and Phytochemistry since then. In the year 2000, he received the "Egon-Stahl-Award for Analytical Phytochemistry, silver Medal" of the Society for Medicinal Plant Research. Main research interests are the search for biologically active secondary metabolites (especially sesquiterpene lactones, lignans)in plants, their structure elucidation, structure-activity-relationships and chemical diversity.
