Chiharu Tohyama is Professor in the Laboratory of Environmental Health Sciences, the Center for Disease Biology and Integrative Medicine, the Graduate School of Medicine, The University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan. After graduating from the University of Tokyo, he has obtained his Ph.D. degree in toxicology from the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY, USA, in 1981. He started his professional career as a Researcher at the National Institute for Environmental Studies, Tsukuba, Japan, and served as Director of the Environmental Health Sciences Division from 1994 to 2004. His research interests range from the basic research on toxicology to the health risk assessment of various chemicals, including dioxins, heavy metals, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Recently, he has been performing experimental studies in the following three research directions: (1) molecular target toxicology, (2) behavioral/cognitive toxicology, and (3) epigenetic toxicology. He has published over 150 original papers in international journals. Besides these basic research activities, he has been serving as a member or a temporary adviser in variety of expert committees for the chemical risk assessments, both internationally and domestically. In addition to this journal, he has been Associate Editor of Toxicological Sciences, as well as editorial member of several international journals.
