Spyros Pournaras was born in Larissa, Greece, in November 1969. He received the Medical Doctor degree in 1993 and the Ph.D. degree in 2000 from the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki, Greece. Since 1995, Pournaras has been working on clinical microbiology. He was working from 1995 to 1999 at the Microbiology Department of AHEPA University Hospital in Thessaloniki and from 2000 to 2001 as Research Fellow at the University Hospital of Larissa. From 2001 to 2007, Pournaras was a Senior Lecturer, and since 2007 he is Assistant Professor of medical microbiology at the Medical School of the University of Thessaly, Thessay, Greece, with clinical, research, and teaching duties. His research interests are mainly focused on the antibiotic resistance mechanisms of significant and resistant nosocomial pathogens. He has been also working on the molecular epidemiology of severe nosocomial infections and the molecular epidemiology of antibiotic resistance. He is Member of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, the American Society for Microbiology, and the Editorial Board of the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy.
