Stanislaw J. Konturek

Stanislaw Jan Konturek was born on October 8, 1931, in Zakliczyn, Poland. He joined the Medical Faculty, Academy of Medicine, Kraków, Poland (1949-1955). He obtained the Physician diploma from the Academy of Medicine, Kraków, Poland (1955). He received his Doctorate in medicine from the Kraków Academy of Medicine in 1960 and joined the same academy as an Associate Professor in physiology in 1963. He received the Postdoctoral NIH Research Fellowship, UCLA, Los Angeles (1964-1966). In 1970, he was Professor of physiology and medicine at the Kraków Academy of Medicine. Konturek is Honorary Doctor of medicine of Medical University of Bialystok, Prague, Wroclaw, Lodz, Warsaw. He is Member of American Gastroenterological Association (1973), Polish Academy of Sciences (1988); Honorary Member of Polish & British Gastroenterology Society (1988); Chairman of Polish Society of Physiology (1991); President of Organization Mondiale de Gastroenterologie. He was Assistant Professor at the Department of Physiology, Kraków Academy of Medicine (1954-1968); Chairman of the Department of Clinical Physiology, Kraków Academy of Medicine (1969-2004); Dean of Medical Faculty , University School of Medicine, Kraków (1993-1995); Rector of Jagiellonian University Medical College, Krakow (1995-1997). His area of research is physiology of gastrointestinal System (enterohormones); prostaglandins, leukotrienes, PAF, nitric oxide, melatonin; organoprotection in digestive system; H2–receptor antagonists, proton pump inhibitors; gastrointestinal motility and growth factors; pathogenesis of gastritis, peptic ulcer, and gastric cancer; pathogenesis of helicobacter pylori infection; mechanisms controlling food intake. He published 950 original publications with citation index of about 15,000; handbook of physiology (10 editions); handbook of gastroenterology and hepatology (4 editions)
