Melanie Richards completed her endocrine surgery fellowship at the University of Michigan Medical Center in 1998. Following her fellowship, she joined the staff at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio. She was actively involved in surgical education and served as a Medical Student Clerkship Director and General Surgery Program Director. She obtained an M.S. degree in health professionals education from the University of Illinois, Chicago, Ill, USA, in 2005. Dr. Richards was the Head of the Section of Endocrine Surgery until she took a position at Mayo Clinic in 2006. She is currently an Associate Professor of surgery at Mayo Clinic and Consultant, Division of Gastroenterologic and General Surgery, College of Medicine. Her special interests include thyroid cancer and minimally invasive surgical techniques in the treatment of endocrine diseases. She has continued to be involved in resident education as an Associate Dean in Graduated Medical Education.
