Path III: the fastest observed H+ ions are produced from autoionization of superexcited HCl** to HCl+( ) with , followed by photodissociation of HCl+( ) by absorption of a fourth photon. The kinetic energy of the observed H+ fragment is determined in the fourth photon absorption step. The colour coding matches that of Figure 3.
