The phylogeny, the habitat preferences and the ecological demands of the crested newt species [18, 19]. To infer the direction of evolutionary changes among crested newt species the latest, most complete phylogenetic analysis [14] was used. The branch lengths are proportional to the number of base substitutions per site [14].
