Optical aberration can be described using the so-called wave aberration function. The wave aberration function is defined as the distance (in optical path length) from reference sphere to the wave front in the exit pupil measured along the ray. Optical aberrations negatively affect the image quality, imaging system transfer characteristics, and cut precision of other measurements.
