A single neural oscillator which consists of two coupled units 𝑥 (excitatory) and 𝑦 (inhibitory). Unit 𝑥 sends excitation (indicated by a triangle) to unit 𝑦; unit 𝑦 sends inhibition (indicated by a small circle) to unit 𝑥.  𝐼_𝑖 and 𝑆 represent an external input and a possible coupling with other neural oscillators, respectively.
