New Structures and Structural Materials in Engineering
Description
With the development of society and economy, many new structural materials and new structures are being used in engineering construction. There has been the development and application of Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP), Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC), Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC), self-healing, self-sensing, self-heating, nanofiller cementitious materials, sustainable materials, prestressed concrete, prefabricated concrete, composite structures, steel reinforced concrete, energy dissipation braced structure, etc. These not only resolve the problems that traditional structural materials and traditional structural forms faced, but also provide grand prospects for the development of new structural materials and new structures.
Currently, engineering structures are facing a series of severe challenges. On the one hand, infrastructures are faced with severe environmental challenges, such as extremely harsh environment, ultra-high or ultra-low temperature, and heavy load. On the other hand, the construction of civil engineering infrastructures is facing the challenge of sustainable development, including large resource consumption, serious environmental pollution, short service life and weak disaster resistance. A high degree of multi-disciplinary integration of civil engineering materials and structures is being employed in order to resolve the technical problems faced by engineering structures. The result has been a series of new structural systems and their corresponding design calculation theory and design method being established to realise the high-performance goals - high reliability in harsh environment, high recovery ability of disaster conditions, high durability for long-term service and high environmental protection.
