Catalytic cycle of the ccNIR. Initially, nitrite binds to a specific c-heme in the ccNIR. Methylviologen serves as electron donor for the 6-electron transfer reaction to produce ammonia from nitrite. The NO, hydroxylamine, and ammonia complexes are shown. The catalytic rate is 824 1/s at room temperature.
