NADPH Oxidases in Chronic Liver Diseases

Figure 1

NADPH oxidases in the liver. The NOX isoforms expressed in the liver are NOX1, NOX2, and NOX4. NOX1 and NOX2 form multimeric complexes on the plasma membrane with their regulatory components and catalyze the production of superoxide () whereas NOX4 is constitutively active and mainly produces H2O2. The NOX-derived reactive oxygen species (ROS) mediate hepatocyte apoptosis, macrophage, and stellate cell activation in a spectrum of liver diseases.
