Changes in root mean square (RMS) errors in mean sea level pressure (PMSL), 500 hPa geopotential height (H500) winds at 850 hPa (W850) and 250 hPa (W250) for the northern hemisphere (NH), tropics (TR), and southern hemisphere (SH) at forecast ranges from T + 24 hours to T + 120 hours for experiments in which ATMS data is added with spatial thinning set to 125/154 km and 80 km. Verification is relative to observations during the period 28 June–28 August 2012. Changes are relative to a control experiment which is similar in configuration to the Met Office operational configuration as at January 2013.
