Air-Sea Interactions and Marine Meteorology

Description

Marine meteorology deals with the monitoring, analysis, modeling, and forecasting of the weather and atmospheric processes which are influenced by the marine environment. Improved understanding of the processes in the meteorology in marine environment is not only based on the understanding of the complex large-scale atmospheric and oceanic dynamics and circulation, but also on the detailed knowledge of air-sea interactions. The importance of marine meteorology also lies in the influence of marine weather on the physical, chemical, and biological aspects of the ocean. Furthermore, the knowledge of marine atmospheric processes and air-sea interaction is vital for the prediction of sea state and pollutant dispersion, and for public safety, ship routing, and naval operations.

The main focus of this special issue will be on recent advances in all aspects of marine meteorology and air-sea interactions, including observations, analysis, modeling, and applications. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Air-sea interaction for momentum, heat, moisture, and chemical exchanges
  • Tropical, midlatitude, and polar cyclone track, intensity, and weather
  • Storm surge and inundation
  • Wind waves and wind-wave-current interaction
  • Marine fog observations, modeling, and forecasting
  • Land-sea breeze circulation
  • Coastal cyclogenesis and forecasting
  • Coastal fronts
  • Low-level jets in coastal and marine environments
  • Structure of the marine atmospheric boundary layer
  • Impact of atmospheric processes on coastal erosion and marine ecosystem
